One thing you will notice if you regularly play computer games online is that a lot of players seem to have really big egos. This is generally the case regardless of which game you play. So why is this?
Well there are a few reasons. I think it's mainly to do with the fact that the people who play computer games online are generally teenagers and people in their early twenties.
These people obviously have a lot of friends both online and in the real world. So they care a great deal about their reputation, which is why they are desperate to do well when playing computer games. In an ideal world they want to be the best player around, and the envy of all their mates.
So they will end up playing these games for hours and hours trying to become the best they possibly can. They may try visiting the various forums and buying strategy guides in order to pick up some useful tips and strategies. If they get any kind of success at all, they will big themselves up and boast about it online.
However it should be pointed out that these people may not have such a big ego as it first appears. Indeed they may just be young boys who are just 10 or 11 years old, for example. It's just that when you are online you can hide behind your keyboard, and basically say whatever you like, knowing that there won't be any consequences. You can brag about yourself as much as you like, particularly if no one knows who you are in real life.
You'll often see people on gaming forums telling everyone about their achievements in various games. They will often big themselves up and make fun of other people. However in real life they are probably the nicest people you could ever hope to meet, with their offline persona being completely different to their online persona.
So the point is that you shouldn't necessarily judge people based on what they are like online. To some extent this is just a facade and if you were to meet them in real life, they would probably be a lot different.
There do seem to be a lot of egos in the online gaming world. However it is generally just young people wanting to beat their friends and beat other players online, hoping to become one of the best players around. As they get older they will probably find that their egos and attitude starts to diminish, and they just enjoy playing the games.
