Bravia EX Series
We start with the EX650, which is available in 40″ and 46″ sizes, and is a replacement for the outgoing EX520. Motionflow XR100 processor, with 50Hz refresh rate and Wireless LAN ready. As with the outgoing Bravia range, the entire range will boast Smart TV capability.
The popular EX720 model from last year is ongoing, and will not be replaced. The end of life for this range will be in June / July, and there is no replacement model announced or planned at this stage. The EX720 is a Full HD, 100Hz Smart TV, with 3D and is Wireless LAN ready. It also has a Motionflow XR200 processor. Available sizes are 32″, 40″, 46″, 55″ and 60″.
Bravia HX Series
Sony's HX750 model has a 200Hz refresh rate, with a Motionflow XR400 processor. You get Wi-fi built in and a set of 3D glasses included. Sony's Edge LED has a new spec called “Frame Dimming”, which adjusts the overall LED backlight levels to suit what you're watching, but at the same time maintaining brightness and contrast. This reduces the power consumption by some margin. Also improved is the 3D experience, via a new “4X High Speed 3D Panel”. Crosstalk is eliminated by displaying 200 frames total (100 in each eye) per second, and using backlight blinking technology which provides a more comfortable 3D experience. Available sizes are 32″, 40″, 46″ and 55″.
The next step up in range is the HX850, which is Sony's replacement for the recently discontinued HX825. With a refresh rate of 200Hz, the motion clarity is beefed up with a stronger Motionflow XR800 processor. The main Picture Engine processor jumps up from “X-Reality” in all of the lower series, to an “X-Reality PRO”. The LED panel also benefits from “Local Dimming”, which is an LED control that alters the level of light output in darker scenes, providing a wider contrast, and better details when viewing darker scenes. A higher level of 3D processing, part of X-Reality PRO, is included in comparison to the HX750, which is termed “3D Super resolution”. Another major difference is the Opti Contrast Panel with Gorilla Glass. This improves viewing experience by eliminating internal and external reflection, giving a better contrast and nicer colours. The HX850 is available in 46″ and 55″ sizes.
The top of the line Bravia LED screen is still the HX925 – the same model which currently sits at the top of Sony's specs charts. This model will be ongoing until at least August this year, and is available in 55″ and 65″ sizes. It is very similarly specced to the HX925, with the only technical, although major, difference being “Intelligent Peak LED” – a system which varies backlight brightness in real time via an array of LEDs directly behind the screen. This makes the HX925 the only fully backlit LED in the Bravia range.
Sony Bravia Tech Glossary
BRAVIA- Bravia stands for Best Resolution Audio Video Integrated Architecture. The name for all Sony TVs.
3D Super Resolution- 3D movies comprise of separate layers of video information. 3D Super Resolution, an integral part of X-Reality PRO, can analyse and enhance resolution, contrast and colour when viewing 3D content.
4X High Speed 3D Panel – Sony uses an advanced 4x High Speed 3D Panel to improve 3D viewing comfort. It achieves this by displaying 200 frames per second in total, consisting of 100 frames per second for each left and right image, writing each image twice in quick succession, turning off backlighting during this process using backlight blinking technology. This ensures a clearer, more comfortable 3D experience without crosstalk.
Advanced Auto Volume – prevents the jarring jumps in television volume when a television show goes into a commercial break, when you change channels or when you switch video inputs.
AVCHD- With wide industry support, AVCHD is a movie file format used by most Full HD capable cameras. Bravia TVs will play back AVCHD content, via USB, for stunning home movies on the big screen. AVCHD stands for Advanced Video Codec High Definition.
Corning Gorilla Glass- Ultra Strong, and scratch resistant, yet less than 1mm thick, this glass offers peace of mind whilst assisting with picture quality as part of OptiContrast.
Digital Noise Reduction- TV broadcasts, DVD movies, Web Video and other video sources often contain digital noise associated with compression and transmission. This is often seen as small specks of random colour, blockiness and other imperfections. DNR minimises this, for a clear, more realistic image.
Full HD 3D- Full HD 3D comprises 1920 X 1080 lines signal resolution but adds ‘left' and ‘right' frames which make up a 3D image. Displayed on a Full HD screen, quickly alternating left and right images are displayed in sync with battery powered glasses. Full HD-3D ensures each eye sees a complete Full HD image.
Game Mode- Many people connect Gaming consoles to their televisions. BRAVIA now has four game modes which optimise screen and sound settings. Modes include Portable, suited to PSP gaming, and modes tailored to older game consoles, including 4:3 aspect ratio games.
i-Manual- There's no need to hunt around for a paper instruction manual, i-Manual is an easy to search, illustrated user manual stored within the television. The easy to navigate, friendly layout makes using i-manual simple. Additionally, i-Manual offers shortcuts including “Basic Operations' and ‘Trouble-shooting'.
Edge LED- Multiple LEDs around the edge of the television to illuminate the LCD panel. This approach allows for very slim, lightweight TV designs, and contributes to low energy consumption.
Dynamic Edge LED with Local Dimming- Dynamic Edge LED models can alter their light output to match what is being viewed, even if both dark and light areas exist on the screen at the same time – this is known as ‘local dimming'. BRAVIA televisions using this technology offer very wide contrast, meaning deeper blacks, better detail and more vibrant colours.
Dynamic Edge LED with Frame Dimming- intelligently adjusts overall LED backlight levels to suit what is being viewed whilst maintaining image brightness and contrast. The result is a significant reduction in power consumption.
Intelligent Peak LED- This system varies backlight brightness in real time, according to what is shown on the screen. An array of LEDs directly behind the screen divides the picture into numerous zones, each of which can be dimmed or boosted independently. The resulting picture has a powerful combination of intense highlights, brighter whites and deep rich, satisfying blacks and shadow details.
Motionflow- the term given to Sony's innovative motion-smoothing technologies. Model dependent, LED backlight activity, LCD panel and picture processing techniques are combined for a smoother, more realistic viewing experience.
Motionflow XR100- Unique Image Blur Reduction, removes common sources of ‘blur' found in many sports broadcasts in combination with special LED backlight activity, for a smoother, more natural viewing experience.
Motionflow XR200- Motionflow XR200 uses Image Blur Reduction and 100Hz frame doubling techniques to smooth motion and are ideal for viewing sport and action movies.
Digital Noise Reduction- TV broadcasts, DVD movies, Web Video and other video sources often contain digital noise associated with compression and transmission. This is often seen as small specks of random colour, blockiness and other imperfections. DNR minimises this, for a clear, more realistic image.
Motionflow XR400- Motionflow XR400 uses Image Blur Reduction and 200Hz panels, and LED backlight blinking to achieve smooth, yet detailed motion reproduction suitable for the fastest sports and action movies.
Motionflow XR800- Using the latest LED backlight blinking and backlight scanning techniques, Motionflow XR800 couples a 200Hz panel, Image Blur reduction and the most advanced video processing for the smoothest, most life-like motion of any BRAVIA television.
Opera TV Store- Bravia TVs now have access to the Opera TV store, where you can download games and social media apps to suit all members of the family.
Opticontrast- Ambient light can degrade picture quality due to reflection. Opticontrast improves picture quality by using thin, strong Gorilla glass in combination with special resin to bond the glass to the LCD panel. This reduces both internal and external reflections from spoiling the viewing experience.
Sony Entertainment Network (SEN)- a suite of entertainment services which can be accessed from BRAVIA TVs. When connected to the internet, you can access Music Unlimited, Video Unlimited and other entertainment channels including Catch up TV.
vTuner- When connected to the internet, BRAVIA TVs give access to thousands of internet radio stations. Browse by genre, language, country and city using the remote control and display.
Wi-Fi Direct- Now supported smart-phones and tablets can send photos, video and music to a BRAVIA without needing a wireless router access point. This means visiting friends and family can share files without connecting to your home network, saving time and set-up.
X-Reality PRO- Sony's latest video processor which lets you enjoy the very best image quality from any 2D or 3D video source using pixel by pixel and frame by frame analysis.
